Direct sowing
Direct sowing means planting seeds straight into the garden soil rather than starting them indoors. Root crops (carrots, radishes) and tap-rooted plants essentially require it; beans, corn, and peas do fine either way. The timing anchor is soil temperature and the last frost date, not the calendar.
