Frost heave
Frost heave is the freezing-and-thawing cycle that lifts roots and recently planted bulbs out of the ground as ice expands beneath them. It's why fall plantings want mulch after the ground freezes (not before) — the mulch keeps soil frozen and stable rather than cycling.
