Mulch
Mulch is any surface cover — straw, leaves, wood chips — that moderates soil temperature, holds moisture, and suppresses weeds. For the planting calendar its key role is winter: applied after the ground freezes, it prevents frost heave and keeps hardy crops and garlic dormant and safe.
